Astrology and Free Will

When I was explaining astrology to someone recently, they asked, “Where does free will fit in astrology?”
It is a great place to begin. In astrology, what we call transits are simply energy moving through time. They highlight when certain themes, pressures, or opportunities are active in your life. What you choose to do during these transits is yours. Every choice and action you make or do not make has a consequence. These are our life lessons.
A transit does not cause events. It does not force you into pain or hand you success. What it offers is far more sacred: it reveals the timing of lessons, openings, pressure points, and personal thresholds.
Astrology is not a prophecy of inevitability.
It is a language of timing, consciousness, and participation.
What Is a Transit?
A transit is simply the movement of a planet through the sky and how it interacts with your birth chart. As it moves, it activates different areas of your life, bringing certain themes to the surface. It does not cause events, but it can highlight timing — when pressure builds, when clarity arrives, or when opportunity opens. Think of it as energetic weather. You still choose how to walk through it.
Where It Shows Up in Your Life?
In astrology, we often talk about transits — but what we truly mean is energy moving through time.
Every transit lands somewhere specific in your chart. It falls into a house (an area of life, e.g. career, relationships, health, home) and moves through a sign (the style it takes), and it unfolds through aspects (trine, square, opposition, conjunction) that set the tone.
That is why two people under the same transit live different stories. Saturn in your tenth house might push you to restructure your career. Saturn in your fourth house may ask you to repair roots and foundations.
When Neptune sits on your Sun in the first house, it can feel like drowning. It may show up as overwhelm, low mood or depression, or a genuine spiritual awakening, depending on your chart and current lessons. The spiritual does not bypass real life. It helps you meet real life with clarity, steadiness, and compassion.
Real Examples: It’s Not What Happens, It’s How You Meet It
When Saturn Knocked: Cheryl’s Story
During a Saturn square, my client Cheryl felt her entire career pressurise. She could have crumbled. Instead, she used that transit to confront her burnout, face the truth, and leave a role that was silently draining her. Saturn did not cause her crisis. It revealed where integrity was missing. She did not just survive it. She rebuilt from it.
When Jupiter Blessed: Daryl’s Story
My client Daryl moved through a Jupiter trine, one of the luckiest transits you can have. There were opportunities everywhere. He hesitated at first and waited for certainty, so he floated. Life expanded only when he consciously stepped toward possibility. Jupiter opened the door. He still had to walk through it. Ease without action becomes stagnation.
Free Will and Choice
So now that we have spoken about how energy lands in the chart, let us talk about how free will works within it. Astrology maps timing. You decide what to do with it. The sky may highlight pressure or opportunity, but it never removes your agency. Every choice you make, or avoid, carries a consequence.
You can meet a difficult transit with avoidance and feel stuck, or you can meet the same energy with honesty and change your direction. Here is a practical example.
Example: Relationship Pressure
Imagine two people both moving through a challenging relationship transit. The energy signals strain, truth and emotional thresholds. One person may choose counselling, clearer communication or even a temporary separation. Another may remain silent and hope that time alone will fix things.
Astrology does not instruct either of them to stay or leave. It simply highlights that something within the relationship needs attention. Their choices remain their own. Over time, ignoring what is breaking often deepens the break. What is faced has a chance to heal. What is avoided tends to grow heavier.
Example: Opportunity in Love
Now imagine two single people in a period where the transits support love and connection. One goes out, meets others, and opens the door to possibility. That person is far more likely to meet someone during that time. The other stays home with no interaction at all. In that case, the window of opportunity may pass quietly, not because the transit was wrong, but because no action was taken.
Sometimes life steps in, and the universe conspires anyway. A friend may arrive with someone unexpected. A neighbour may knock. Even then, it is still the person’s choice whether to engage, respond or retreat. The sky may offer a moment. What we do with it remains ours.
Free will is not about controlling outcomes; it’s about making choices. It is about choosing your response. Astrology offers awareness and alignment, not instruction. It helps you recognise what time it is in your inner life, so that whatever you choose, you choose it consciously. We come into this life to learn lessons, and transits serve as timely triggers for those lessons. They bring themes to the surface so that growth is possible, wisdom is earned, and the soul can move forward with greater clarity.
